New Cheetah Cubs Spotted In HiP

Exciting News! Wildlife ACT’s iMfolozi Monitoring team have confirmed a visual of CF36 with three healthy 4-5 month old cubs. These cubs had not yet been positively identified, making this an exciting discovery for the team.

Cheetah cubs are born blind and weigh around 250-300 grams at birth. They rely entirely on their mother for protection and nourishment during their first few months. Their distinctive grayish “mantle” of fur along their back helps them blend into tall grass, offering camouflage from predators.

Cheetah cubs stay with their mother for about 18 months, during which they learn essential survival skills like hunting and evading danger. Sadly, Cheetah cub mortality rates are high, with many falling prey to predators such as lions and hyenas in their early weeks.

Spotting three healthy cubs of this age is a positive sign for the species population in Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park and we look forward to continuing to monitor this young family.
